Beginning with the 2003-2004 school year, Governor Baxter School for the Deaf has entered into a collaboration with Portland High School (PHS) to provide a high school education to our students in grades 9-12 (Printable brochure). GBSD is providing Teachers of the Deaf to PHS to teach Language Arts and to provide academic support for our students. We are also providing a teacher to teach ASL to hearing students at the high school.
Last year our high school program began to implement Chapter 127, also called Promising Futures: A Call to Improve Learning for Maine's Secondary Students. We began to incorporate the Core Principles, Core Practices for Learning and Teaching, and The Maine Learning Results Guiding Principles into our high school program. Moving our high school program to Portland High School is in keeping with the Chapter 127/Promising Futures objectives.
Our collaboration with Portland High School also complies with the The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) which is designed to improve student achievement.
